A lot of students are sending us messages asking about companies that accept applications if the students have less than 60% aggregate in the final year or all four years of engineering. It seems that it has become a norm for all companies coming for campus recruitment to put up an eligibility criteria of minimum 60%. Some companies go a step forward and demand more than 60 % throughout in 10th and 12th boards and even in the 4-year B.E or B.Tech course or through out.
Though it might seem unfair for the students who got less marks due to some serious health issues or dropping out due to personal problems, that’s how it is for most companies.
Let’s start thinking from the company side.
If it is a normal or average company, it doesn’t bother about the percentages and merits of the candidate because it needs employees for their “normal” projects.
If MNCs started to recruit the candidates with lesser academic qualifications below the eligibility criteria, they have lesser chances of getting “Better” projects from different clients. These clients need company profile, employee profile. Will the client in japan know this particular candidate have talent too ? Has he seen that candidate ? NO.
In the long term, academic qualifications will save us.. in the times of job recessions. Those who have better academic merits are considered for the long run of the company.
If normal company also bothers about less than 60%, then it is indication that it is developing company. Some unknown companies makes turnover in billions. They don’t like to take a chance. They have to be sure.
From Recruiter’s Perspective
People with talent may not have great scores sometimes. Life in the corporate is an exam. Here the results are quarterly reviews, annual hike, year end bonus, promotion etc. So someone who performs well in exams is assumed to perform well in a company.
In any company, there are certain skills that the recruiters demand from every job applicant. Here are the top ones:
1. Ability to communicate well.
2. Good aptitude skills. (to determine your analytical & reasoning skills)
3. Basic knowledge of at least one technology.
My suggestion is to stop bothering about your SSC and 10+2 marks and percentage and concentrate on improving your communication and aptitude skills. Find a subject you love in your curriculum and become better at it when you have free time on your hands during college. If you have the skills, the recruiters will definitely spot the talent.
